car tail light led upgrade insurance question?

Ok I want to try upgrading my tail lights and eventually the hole car to led because they are brighter therefore safer and they last for ever. so here is my question people have told me that no leds are dot certified so if I went through with this and I was rear ended my insurance might not cover it….because they love loopholes.

    got to auto parts store and check out the lights/a lot of new cars and trucks have them/if they are legal you are legal
